Towing capacity is the maximum weight a vehicle can safely pull behind it-stated in pounds and shown in the owner's manual and on the doorjamb. Not all vehicles can tow; most sedans cannot. Trucks and large SUVs are built for it.

### Towing vs. payload
Towing capacity is what you pull *behind* the vehicle (trailer, boat, etc.). Payload is what you carry *inside* the truck bed. Both matter: a truck might tow 12,000 pounds but only carry 2,000 in the bed. You need the right vehicle for *both* your needs.

### How to choose
Add up the weight of your trailer plus cargo, then find a vehicle rated well above that total-never max out capacity. Factor in passengers and fuel, which also count toward the vehicle's weight limit. RAM and Jeep trucks at Castle CDJR of Naperville offer a range of towing capacities.
